Tessa lay on the grass for a long moment, staring up at the cloudy sky.

She wasn't hurt, but her dignity was completely gone.

She slowly pushed herself up, brushing wet grass off her pants. She looked around the empty porch for somewhere to sit down.

The couch was packed in the U-Haul truck.

The porch chairs were gone.

My father gathered the last of his personal bags, refused to shake my hand, and climbed into his car.

My mother gave me a brief, cold hug before getting into the passenger seat.

"You're going to regret treating your family this way," Linda whispered as she pulled away.

"I already feel much better, Mom," I said gently.

Denise took the keys from Melissa, smiled at the pristine house, and walked inside to start her new chapter.

I climbed back into my SUV, drove home to my wife, and slept peacefully for the first time in weeks.
