Chapter 10 - Raccoons and Burning Ovens

|
My father marched over, stepping directly between me and Denise.
"It's our family home!" Ron declared loudly, wiping a fake tear from his eye.
"My son is kicking his elderly parents out onto the street because he's throwing a petty temper tantrum!"
Denise raised an eyebrow and looked over at me.
"Is that right?"
"That is a very creative summary of the situation," I said calmly.
Denise's husband stepped forward, looking professional.
"Are there legal tenants currently occupying the house?"
"There are no formal leases," I explained.
"Just temporary occupants whose time has run out."
"We are not temporary!" my father bellowed.
Melissa appeared right beside us, dropping her professional smile into place.
"The property will be delivered completely vacant upon legal closing, sir."
"Over my dead body!" Ron shouted.
Right on cue, Tessa came running down the staircase.
In her arms, she was carrying the massive, heavy seat cushion from the burgundy recliner.
I couldn't comprehend her strategy—perhaps she believed that taking the cushion would make the chair useless to a buyer.
She stomped into the hallway, pointing a finger at me in front of Denise.
"This entire nightmare is happening because his selfish wife tried to steal my chair!"
Denise blinked, completely lost.
"Your... chair?"
"My seven-month pregnant wife sat in the recliner for three minutes to rest her back," I clarified to the room.
"You're lying about what she did!" Tessa screamed.
I leaned against the wall and crossed my arms.
"Please, Tessa. Tell everyone here. What did my pregnant wife do to deserve what happened next?"
"She knew it was my chair!" Tessa shouted.
Denise's husband looked at the cushion clutched in Tessa's arms, then looked at me.
"So... what actually happened?"
May you like
I looked Denise directly in the eye.
"Tessa threw a heavy leather shoe at my pregnant wife's head, my father laughed, and my mother told her to sit on the floor."
