Chapter 18 - Spring-Loaded Justice

|
Six months after Lily was born, I received a strange phone call from Denise, the buyer who had purchased my parents' house.
"Ian, hi. I'm sorry to bother you at work," Denise said, her voice sounding hesitant.
"Is everything okay with the house, Denise?" I asked, putting down my clipboard.
"The house is wonderful," she replied.
"But... something odd happened last night."
I leaned against my desk.
"What happened?"
"Around 11:00 PM, my husband and I noticed a car idling on the street right in front of our driveway," Denise explained.
"We watched from the upstairs window. A woman got out, walked onto our lawn, and stood near the front porch for almost ten minutes."
My stomach tightened.
"Did you get a look at her?"
"It was dark, but she was holding something small in her hands. She stood there staring at the front door, then walked over to the side window where the burgundy recliner is located."
"Did she try to break in?" I asked, my voice dropping.
"No," Denise said.
"She just placed a small object on the porch steps, got back into her car, and drove away."
"What was the object?"

Denise paused.
"It was a small ceramic moon accessory. And a yellow sticky note."
