My heart sank.

"What did the note say, Denise?"

"It said: This energy doesn't belong to you."

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, anger boiling up in my chest.

"Denise, I am so sorry. I will handle this immediately. If she comes back onto your property again, call the police right away."

"We installed security cameras this morning," Denise said softly.

"I just wanted to let you know."

An hour later, I drove straight to the furniture showroom where Tessa worked.

I walked past rows of dining sets and sectional sofas until I spotted her standing near a display of leather recliners.

She looked up, her expression freezing when she saw me approaching.

Her face went pale, but she quickly forced a sneer onto her face.

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Denise has security cameras, Tessa," I lied smoothly.

"If you set foot on that property again, she is pressing formal trespassing charges against you."

Tessa's eyes flashed with rage.

"That house belongs to our memory! You gave away Grandpa's chair to a total stranger!"

"You sold your dignity over a piece of furniture," I told her, keeping my voice low so her coworkers wouldn't hear.

"If you harass those people again, I will personally file a restraining order on their behalf."
