Chapter 35 - The Watcher at the Gate

|

I stared at the damp piece of paper lying on the coffee table between us.

There was no signature. No return address. The handwriting wasn't Lauren's sharp cursive—it was different, neater, almost clinical.

Had Lauren sent it through a contact at her facility? Was it a message from someone else entirely? Or was it simply an echo of a past that would forever linger at the boundaries of our lives?

James didn't panic. He didn't yell, slam his fists, or curse at the ceiling.

He picked up the damp paper, walked over to the crackling fireplace, and tossed it directly into the dancing orange flames. We watched in silence as the dried marigold and the paper turned to black ash, disappearing up the chimney.

James walked over to the front window, pulling back the heavy curtain an inch to look out into the dark, rain-swept street.

Far down the block, parked beneath the flickering yellow light of a broken streetlamp, a lone car sat idling in the storm. Its headlights flicked on for a split second—two bright, glowing eyes cutting through the darkness—before the vehicle turned around and slowly drove away into the night.

I walked over to James, slipping my hand into his warm, firm grip.

For years, I had believed that safety meant the complete absence of danger—a magical world where bad people disappeared forever and family meant eternal peace.

Now, I knew the truth.

Safety wasn't the absence of a threat. Safety was the willingness to guard the door. It was the strength to enforce boundaries, the courage to burn the toxic past, and the unwavering resolve to protect the people you love, no matter what shadows waited outside in the rain.

James wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side as we watched the tail lights of the distant car vanish into the dark.

"Are you okay?" he whispered into my hair.

I looked back toward the hallway, where the stairs led up to our sleeping daughter's room, and then at the mantel where Nanna's red stocking hung safely in the warm light of the fire.

"Yes," I said, a quiet, unbreakable smile touching my lips. "We are ready."
