Chapter 20 - The Silent Months

|
By the time June arrived, the silence in our lives had transformed from something tense and unnatural into something deeply peaceful.
Without the constant emergency phone calls, the guilt trips, and the endless family meetings, our home felt lighter. The air was no longer thick with unspoken resentment. James seemed less burdened, the permanent crease between his eyebrows finally smoothing out as he played with Emma in the living room every night after work.
Yet, healing from long-term family trauma isn't a straight line.
I found myself jumping whenever the doorbell rang unexpectedly. Every time a unknown number flashed on my cell phone screen, my stomach seized up, expecting Lauren's voice on the other end.
"You're still waiting for the other shoe to drop," James remarked one Saturday afternoon while we were folding laundry in the bedroom.
"Is it that obvious?" I asked, folding a tiny pair of denim overalls.
"Sarah, you check the lock on the front door three times before we go to sleep," he said gently, setting down a stack of towels and walking over to me. "It's normal. You spent thirty years conditioned to believe that your family's peace was fragile and depended entirely on Lauren's mood."
"I just can't shake the feeling that this calm is fake," I admitted, resting my forehead against his chest. "Like she's just waiting for us to lower our guard."
"Let her wait," James murmured, wrapping his arms around me. "We didn't just build a fence, Sarah. We built a life. She can't touch us unless we let her in, and I promise you, I will never let her near you or Emma again."
His voice was steady, grounded, and completely devoid of doubt.
For years, I had believed that being a good daughter meant sacrificing my own sanity to keep everyone else happy. But standing in the quiet bedroom, wrapped in my husband's arms while our daughter babbled happily in her crib down the hall, I realized something vital.

Peace wasn't something you asked your family to give you. Peace was something you commanded, enforced, and defended with everything you had.
