Chapter 32 - The Final Boundary

|

We drove to my parents' house unannounced.

When Dad opened the front door, his face fell when he saw the intense, furious expressions on our faces. "Sarah? James? What's happened?"

"Where is your wife?" James demanded, stepping straight past him into the foyer.

Mom emerged from the kitchen holding a dish towel. "James? What's wrong?"

James threw the bank statement onto the dining room table. "Lauren wired a thousand dollars into Emma's college fund three days ago. She stalked Sarah and Emma at the park two weeks ago, and now she's sending money."

Mom gasped, covering her mouth with her hands. "Oh, dear God..."

"I want the absolute truth right now," James growled, stepping toward Mom. "Are you sending her money? Are you giving her funds that allow her to stay near us?"

"No!" Mom screamed, tears bursting from her eyes. "I swear on my life, James! I haven't given her a single penny! The only money I have goes to paying back Emma's trust fund!"

Dad stepped between James and Mom, putting his hands up defensively. "James, look at me. I control our bank accounts now. Every dollar that leaves this house goes through my hands. I promise you on my soul, we are not funding Lauren."

I looked at my father's eyes. They were clear, filled with raw pain, but entirely honest. He wasn't lying.

"If she contacts you again," I said, my voice cutting through the crying in the room, "if she sends a letter, a text, or a third-party message, and you do not report it to the police within five minutes... you will never see Emma again for the rest of your natural lives. Do you understand me?"

May you like

"We understand," Dad said firmly, wrapping his arm around Mom's trembling shoulders. "We choose Emma, Sarah. We choose safety."
