"What about Mom and Dad?" I asked, leaning into the speakerphone. "Is she allowed to contact them?"

"That is entirely up to your parents," Marcus explained. "However, your parents' legal counsel has advised them that any attempt by Lauren to use them as an intermediary to reach you will result in immediate legal consequences for her probation status."

"Good," James said firmly. "Keep the wall high."

After we hung up, I sat at the kitchen table, staring out at the backyard. It felt surreal. For months, I had lived in a constant state of hypervigilance, expecting Lauren to pop up at our front door, to leave toxic voicemails, or to launch another smear campaign among our extended relatives.
