Chapter 25 - The Wooden Spoon

|
Christmas Day arrived with a soft blanket of light snow dusting the front yard.
Our living room was warm, filled with the cozy scent of pine needles, roasted cinnamon, and hot cocoa. There were fewer people in our home this year. No crowded dining table, no loud arguments over politics, no walking on eggshells around Lauren's fragile, unpredictable moods.
Emma toddled happily between the plush living room couch and the brightly lit Christmas tree. She was wearing a pair of festive green flannel pajamas, clutching a plain wooden mixing spoon she had stolen from the kitchen counter like it was the most precious treasure in the world.
At 10:00 AM, Dad arrived.
He looked nervous as he stepped through the front door, taking off his heavy winter coat and boots. He spent his allocated hour sitting on the floor with Emma, helping her stack wooden blocks and chuckling quietly as she proudly showed him her wooden spoon. When his hour was up, he gave James a firm handshake, hugged me tightly, and left without complaint.
At 2:00 PM, Mom arrived.
She walked in quietly, carrying a small, tastefully wrapped box. She sat down on the living room rug, several feet away from where Emma was playing, strictly honoring the boundary we had set. She didn't rush over to hug Emma. She didn't shower her with overwhelming attention. She simply sat there, watching her granddaughter play, letting Emma decide whether or not to approach.
For twenty minutes, Emma ignored her, zooming a small wooden car across the rug.
Then, Emma stopped. She looked up at Mom, her big brown eyes curious. She picked up her beloved wooden spoon, waddled slowly across the rug on her chubby legs, and held the spoon out toward Mom's face.
Mom froze. She turned her head slightly and looked up at me, seeking permission before making a single move.
I nodded once from the kitchen doorway.
Mom turned back to Emma, reached out with gentle, trembling hands, and accepted the wooden spoon as if it were made of solid gold.
"Thank you, Emma," Mom whispered, tears glittering in her eyes. "It's beautiful."
May you like
Emma beamed, let out a tiny giggle, and plunked down right beside Mom on the rug.
