Chapter 29 - The Shadow at the Playground

|

The trust that had taken months to rebuild with Mom was instantly incinerated. James and I immediately reinstated the strict embargo, blocking Mom's number and barring her from our home once again.

Five days later, the situation turned from a family dispute into a terrifying reality.

It was a bright, sunny Tuesday afternoon. I had taken Emma to a popular neighborhood park three blocks from our house. The playground was filled with children, mothers chatting on benches, and toddlers chasing pigeons through the grass.

Emma was giggling on the small plastic slide, wearing her favorite blue denim jacket.

I stood three feet away, watching her intently. As I bent down to help her off the bottom step of the slide, a strange sensation prickled at the back of my neck—the distinct, heavy feeling of being watched.

I straightened up and looked around.

Parked across the street, in the shade of a large oak tree, was a dark grey sedan with heavily tinted windows. The car was idling, a thin plume of exhaust rising from the tailpipe.

As I stared at the vehicle, the driver's side window rolled down a mere two inches.

Inside the dark interior, I saw the lower half of a woman's face. She had pale skin, sharp red lipstick, and blonde hair tucked beneath a dark headscarf.

She was holding a camera with a long zoom lens, pointed directly at Emma.

My heart stopped beating.

"Emma, come here right now!" I gasped, grabbing my daughter into my arms before she could even protest.

The moment I scooped Emma up, the dark sedan's engine roared to life. The tires squealed against the asphalt as the car accelerated down the street, running a stop sign and vanishing around the corner before I could read the license plate.

The woman in the car was Lauren.
