We celebrated Emma's third birthday in our backyard under a bright blue sky. The lawn was filled with colorful balloons, a small inflatable water slide, and the sound of joyous children's laughter echoing through the trees.
Mom and Dad were there. They had continued their therapy, earning their way back into our lives step by step, boundary by boundary. Mom sat on a lawn chair, watching Emma blow out the three candles on her chocolate cake, tears of quiet, peaceful joy rolling down her cheeks.
Dad stood by the grill with James, flipping burgers and laughing at a dad joke, two men who had once been separated by cowardice now united by respect.
Standing on the back porch with a cold glass of lemonade, I looked out at my family.
