Chapter 4 - Poured Foundations

|

The silence in the grand foyer was absolute. Two hundred wealthy socialites stood still, watching the confrontation like a scene from a tragic theater play.

I did not flinch. I did not look away from my son’s wild, bloodshot eyes.

“I never asked for worship, Victor,” I said, my voice cutting through the quiet room like cold iron. “I only asked for respect. Never forget who poured the foundation beneath your feet.”

Those eight words seemed to ignite something dangerous inside him.

Victor’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson. He stepped closer, his chest rising and falling heavily.

“You didn't pour anything!” he roared, completely losing control. “You’re just an old woman who got lucky! This house, this life, this success—it’s mine! This mansion has nothing to do with you!”

“Victor, please,” I whispered softly, seeing the stranger standing where my little boy used to be.

“You think you can come into my home and lecture me?!” he screamed.

Before I could take a breath, Victor grabbed the lapels of my wool coat and shoved me violently backwards.

My shoes lost their grip on the slick marble. My back slammed hard against the sharp edge of a display pedestal, sending an ornamental vase crashing to the floor beside me.

Pain shot up my spine, taking my breath away.

I looked up from the floor, expecting to see horror in my son’s eyes. Expecting him to reach out a hand and apologize for his temper.

Instead, I saw total, unbridled malice.

“Victor...” I choked out.

He didn't listen. He stepped forward and raised his fist.
