Thomas Vance reached into his leather briefcase one last time. He pulled out a dark yellow, sealed envelope with red wax across the flap.
He walked over to Victor and set it gently on the step beside him.
“There is one final document from Mrs. Hayes,” Thomas said softly. “She asked me to deliver it to you personally.”
Victor stared at the yellow envelope. His hands were trembling so badly he could barely break the wax seal.
When he opened the folder, three large color photographs slid out onto his lap.
They were high-resolution medical images taken at the urgent care facility four hours earlier.
The first photo showed my swollen, bruised face, my left eye completely closed, blood caked across my chin.
The second showed the deep purple contusions covering my shoulders and arms.
The third was a copy of an official Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Incident Report, filed at 3:15 AM under Criminal Case Number #88492.
CHARGES: FELONY ELDER ABUSE, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, AND BATTERY WITH INTENT TO CAUSE SEVERE BODILY HARM.

Beneath the police report sat a stack of sworn witness statements, signed by six of the catering staff members who had watched the attack from the kitchen service doors.
Victor stared at the photos, his face turning a sickly, ghostly grey.
