Chapter 16 - Sirens in the Canyon

|
Four marked Los Angeles Police Department cruisers pulled up to the front courtyard of the mansion, their red and blue emergency lights flashing brightly against the white stone facade.
Four uniformed officers stepped out, accompanied by two plainclothes detectives.
They walked through the open mahogany doors, their heavy boots clicking loudly against the marble floor.
“Victor Hayes?” the lead detective asked, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
Victor stayed seated on the staircase step, his head in his hands, staring blankly at the medical photographs of my bruised face lying on the floor before him. He couldn't speak. He couldn't move.
Vanessa ran up to the detective, grabbing his sleeve frantically.
“Officer, you don't understand!” she sobbed, completely breaking down. “It was a family argument! It was just a misunderstanding! His mother fell! She’s trying to ruin us!”
The detective pulled his arm away from her grip, his expression cold and unimpressed.
“Ma'am, we have six independent witness statements, security camera footage recovered from the home's primary server, and a certified medical report,” the detective stated firmly. “Mr. Hayes is under arrest for felony elder abuse and aggravated assault.”

They pulled his hands behind his back and snapped the cold steel handcuffs around his wrists with a heavy CLICK.
