Chapter 8 - The Independent Clinic

Advanced Genetics was a pristine, highly respected private facility in the affluent suburb of Oak Park. When Maya’s SUV pulled into the parking lot, I immediately noticed the four black Cadillac Escalades idling near the entrance.
True to his nature, Dominic had brought an army.
I parked exactly three spots away from his convoy. I took a deep breath, unbuckled my seatbelt, and turned to the backseat.
"Alright, guys," I said with a warm, encouraging smile. "We’re going inside for a quick doctor’s appointment. Just a little swab on the cheek like a toothbrush. Can everyone be on their best behavior?"
A chorus of "Yes, Mom" echoed from the back.
We walked toward the glass double doors. Dominic was waiting in the lobby. He wore a dark charcoal suit, devoid of a tie, looking like a caged panther forced into a domestic setting. Flanking him were three massive men in suits—his personal security detail.
I stopped in the doorway, crossing my arms. I looked directly at Dominic, then pointedly at his guards.
Dominic’s jaw tightened. He snapped his fingers once. The three mountains of muscle immediately stepped outside into the freezing cold, leaving us entirely alone in the lobby with the terrified receptionist.
"Satisfied?" Dominic asked, his voice laced with venom.
"Perfectly," I replied.
The kids filed in behind me. Dominic’s breath audibly hitched. In the harsh fluorescent lighting of the clinic, the resemblance was even more staggering. He didn't just see his own features; he saw generations of the Gallow bloodline staring back at him in miniature form.
Henry, entirely unfazed by the tension, walked right up to the coffee table in the center of the lobby. He picked up a glossy medical magazine, frowned at it, and shoved his left hand into his pocket.

Dominic stared at his son, his tough mafia exterior cracking violently. He raised his own left hand, instinctively mimicking the boy’s posture, before quickly dropping it to his side.
"The nurses are ready," Dominic said, his voice unusually hoarse. "Let's get this over with."
