Chapter 19 - The Ultimatum

Dominic froze, pulling back to look at me, absolute devastation written across his features.
"Why?" he whispered. "I fixed it. The threats are gone. I can protect you now."
"You fixed the past, Dominic," I said, standing back up and offering him my hand to help him off the floor. "But you cannot fix what your world fundamentally is."
He stood, towering over me, but the dominance was entirely gone. He was desperately hanging onto my every word.
"I love you for what you did this week," I admitted, my voice steady. "But I will not put my children in a cage. I will not raise Noah to take over a syndicate that solves its problems with blood. I will not let Clare grow up thinking she is a pawn for a political marriage. I spent five years building a life where my kids can ride their bikes in the street without a sniper on the roof. I am not trading their freedom for your money."
"They are my blood," Dominic pleaded, a hint of the possessive mafia king bleeding through his desperation. "They are Gallow heirs."
"They are children," I corrected sharply. "And if you want to be their father, you are going to do it on my terms."
Dominic swallowed hard. "Name them."
"You do not live with us. We do not move into the estate," I stated, ticking the rules off on my fingers. "You can visit on weekends. No armed guards in the house. You do not buy them extravagant, absurd gifts to win their affection. You earn it. You read them bedtime stories. You put together their Legos. You show up for school plays, and you sit in the folding chairs like every other parent."
Dominic stared at me, processing the reality that he was being forced to submit to a suburban existence.
"And if your world—your enemies, your business—ever bleeds over into this house, or endangers them for a single second," I finished, my voice turning to steel, "I will take them, and you will never find us again. Do you understand me?"

He looked at the fierce, unyielding woman standing before him. He realized I was the only person in the world who could command him.
"I understand," he swore, nodding slowly.
