Chapter 12 - The New Bride's Desperation

|
Two days passed in tense, suffocating silence. The black SUVs remained parked at the end of my street, a silent promise that Dominic was watching, waiting, and plotting his next move.
On the third afternoon, while the kids were in the backyard playing in the snow, a sleek silver Mercedes pulled into my driveway.
I watched through the kitchen window as Adrienne stepped out. She was dressed in an immaculate cashmere coat, her perfect hair blowing in the winter wind. But beneath the glamorous facade, she looked frantic. She approached my front door and knocked sharply.
I opened it, leaving the screen door locked between us.
"Adrienne," I said neutrally.
"Let me in," she demanded, her voice tight. "We need to talk."
"Anything you have to say can be said from the porch."
She glared at me, dropping the polite society act. "Do you have any idea what you've done? He hasn't slept in three days. He exiled his mother to the summer house. He hasn't spoken a single word to me since the wedding night."
"Sounds like a typical Gallow marriage," I replied dryly.
"How much do you want?" she snapped, pulling a checkbook from her designer bag. "Name your price. Take your kids and move to Europe. I will personally fund it. Dominic is mine now. You don't get to waltz back in and steal my life."
I looked at the trembling woman on my porch and felt a sudden, heavy wave of pity. She was trapped in the exact same nightmare I had barely survived.
"He married you because Rosa told him you were fertile, didn't she?" I asked softly.
Adrienne froze. The pen slipped from her fingers, clattering against the wooden porch.
"They ran tests on you before he even proposed," I guessed, reading the absolute terror in her eyes. "You're the prize broodmare. But now that he has four guaranteed heirs... your value to the syndicate is zero. You aren't here to protect your marriage, Adrienne. You're here because you're terrified they're going to discard you just like they discarded me."

Tears welled in her eyes, ruining her expensive mascara. She didn't deny it. She just turned around and practically ran back to her Mercedes.
The Gallow empire was already cracking from the inside.
