Chapter 15 - The Secret in the Folder

Silvio looked down at his trembling hands, unable to meet my eyes as he unveiled the most grotesque betrayal I had ever heard.
"The fertility clinic you both went to was entirely owned by the syndicate," Silvio explained quietly. "Rosa paid the chief medical officer a fortune. But they didn't just alter your test results to make you look barren. They couldn't risk Dominic insisting on a second opinion outside the family's control."
I opened the leather folder, staring at the clinical medical logs printed on the thick, encrypted pages.
"They drugged him," I said, the absolute horror of the reality washing over me again, just as it had six years ago.
"Yes," Silvio nodded, tears finally pooling in his aged eyes. "Rosa had the private chef slip a specialized, chemical suppressant into Dominic’s meals. It was a military-grade compound. Temporary, but highly effective. It reduced his viability to absolute zero."
My stomach twisted violently. Dominic’s own mother had chemically castrated him without his knowledge, purely to orchestrate the destruction of his marriage.
"The doctors ran the tests on both of you," Silvio continued. "They handed Dominic a heavily forged file that proved you were the problem. But the real file—the one in that folder—proves that during those five years, Dominic was completely sterile. You were perfectly healthy."
"And when the divorce was finalized?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
"Rosa ordered the chef to stop the compound. Dominic's system flushed it out in a matter of weeks. His fertility returned just in time for his final weekend with you."
The hyper-ovulation from my own intense fertility treatments, colliding with Dominic's suddenly rebounding system, had resulted in the quadruplets. It was a biological miracle born entirely out of a mafia conspiracy.
"Why didn't you tell him?" I asked, my voice cracking with suppressed rage. "You were like a father to him."
"Because Rosa threatened my family," Silvio choked out. "She said if I spoke a word, my daughters would disappear. I am a coward. I am so sorry."

I closed the folder, sliding it back into my purse.
"Your apology means nothing to me, Silvio," I said coldly, sliding out of the booth. "But you better start packing your bags. Because tomorrow morning, I am handing this file to Dominic."
