Chapter 14 - The Consigliere's Guilt

|
I knew Rosa’s brazen attempt to take the children meant the Gallow family was panicking. It was time to strike the final blow.
I left the kids with Maya and drove to a quiet, dimly lit Italian restaurant on the outskirts of the city. It was a neutral zone, operated by an old family friend who owed me a favor.
I sat in the back booth. Ten minutes later, Silvio slid into the seat across from me.
Dominic’s closest adviser looked incredibly old. The sharp, impeccably dressed consigliere I remembered from six years ago was now a man weighed down by heavy, suffocating guilt. He ordered a black coffee but didn't touch it.
"You shouldn't have called me here," Silvio murmured, his eyes darting toward the door. "If Dominic finds out I'm speaking to you..."
"Dominic is busy trying to figure out how I miraculously conceived quadruplets," I said, placing the plain leather folder on the center of the checkered tablecloth.
Silvio stared at the folder. He swallowed hard, the Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat.
"You kept it," he whispered.
"Of course I kept it," I replied, my voice steady but laced with decades of anger. "You handed it to me the night I packed my bags. You told me not to open it until I was safely out of the city. You said it was my insurance policy."
"It was," Silvio defended weakly. "I knew Rosa would try to have you silenced if she thought you were a threat. I gave you leverage so she would let you walk away."
"You didn't give me leverage, Silvio," I hissed, leaning forward. "You gave me the weapon that destroys this entire family. I haven't shown it to Dominic yet. I want you to tell me exactly how it happened. From your own mouth."
Silvio closed his eyes. The guilt was finally too heavy to carry.
"Rosa demanded an heir," he began, his voice trembling. "When a year passed, she grew impatient. She didn't want a quiet, soft wife for her son. She wanted a political alliance. She wanted to merge the Gallow syndicate with the Russian families. But Dominic refused to divorce you because he loved you."

"So she made sure he had a reason to," I finished for him, the disgust rising in my throat.
"Yes," Silvio confessed.
