Chapter 4 - The Parting Question

|

The agreement was struck in the freezing cold, sealed only by the hostile glare between two people who used to share a bed. Dominic signaled to his head of security, a massive man who immediately began typing on an encrypted phone to arrange the neutral clinic.

I turned around, gently guiding Noah and Clare away from the iron bars, motioning for Maya to open the doors of the SUV. The children climbed inside, oblivious to the fact that they had just tilted the axis of the Chicago underworld.

Before I stepped into the passenger seat, I turned back to face the gate. Dominic was still standing there, watching my every move like a predator tracking a ghost. Adrienne was gripping his arm so tightly her knuckles were white, entirely ignored by her new husband.

“Dominic,” I called out, my voice carrying clearly over the idling engine of my sister’s car.

He didn't speak, but his eyes narrowed.

“If the specialists we saw for five years never actually proved that I was the problem...” I paused, letting the weight of my words settle over the courtyard. “Why were you so absolutely certain that I was?”

The silence that followed was deafening.

I looked past Dominic, my gaze landing on Silvio, Dominic’s closest adviser and the family’s longtime consigliere. Silvio was standing in the shadows of the portico. As my words echoed in the cold air, Silvio physically flinched and immediately lowered his eyes to the marble floor.

Adrienne looked up at Dominic, sensing the sudden, terrifying shift in the atmosphere.

For the first time that night, Dominic Gallow didn’t look angry. He didn’t look arrogant. He looked down at the plain leather folder tucked securely under my arm, and a flash of genuine, visceral fear crossed his face. The seed of doubt had finally been planted.

I didn't wait for his answer. I closed the car door, and Maya sped away into the darkness, leaving the Gallow family to choke on the ghosts of their own lies.
