Chapter 10 - A Ghost Stirs

|

Two weeks after the gala, the autumn weather in Chicago had turned brisk and unforgiving. I was in the middle of a high-level budget review with my chief financial officer when Marcus, my head of security, stepped into the conference room. Marcus rarely interrupted closed-door meetings unless it was a matter of absolute urgency. His posture was rigid, and his expression was completely unreadable.

"Excuse me, Mr. Vance," Marcus said, his deep voice cutting through the financial discussion. "May I have a word with you in your private office?"

I nodded to my CFO, paused the meeting, and followed Marcus down the glass-paneled hallway. As soon as the heavy oak door of my office clicked shut, Marcus handed me a slim, encrypted digital tablet.

"We have a situation, sir," Marcus stated flatly. "Your estate attorney in Ohio contacted us thirty minutes ago. It seems your brother, Julian, caused a severe disturbance at the law firm this morning."

"Julian?" I asked, my brow furrowing. "The funeral expenses were handled completely anonymously. The file was closed."

"He didn't go there to thank the anonymous donor," Marcus corrected. "Julian demanded to see the financial records of the estate. When the paralegal refused, he grew violent and attempted to force his way into the filing room. During the altercation, he caught sight of an internal ledger on a desk. The ledger contained the routing numbers for the foundation's shell account used to pay the burial fees."

I stared at the tablet, scrolling through the incident report.

"He knows," I said quietly, the realization sinking in.

"Yes, sir," Marcus confirmed. "He took a photo of the ledger before the police arrived to escort him off the premises. He cross-referenced the corporate shell name, which inevitably led back to your primary holding company. Julian now knows that you are the architect of the Arthur Vance Foundation, and he knows your exact net worth."

"And where is he now?" I asked, setting the tablet down on my desk.

"He purchased a one-way bus ticket," Marcus said, his eyes narrowing. "He is currently en route to Chicago. He should arrive by tomorrow morning."
