Chapter 29 - The Matriarch’s Web

|
The following morning, I didn't go to the construction site. I went to war.
I sat in the sleek, glass-walled conference room of my lead defense attorney, Marcus Thorne. Marcus was a shark in a tailored suit, the man who had helped me navigate the brutal legal severance from the Vance family empire.
I slid a printed copy of the altered ledger across the polished mahogany table.
Marcus reviewed the document in silence, his expression unreadable behind his silver-rimmed glasses. After a long moment, he sighed, tossing the paper back onto the table.
"It's a masterful forgery, Arthur," Marcus stated flatly. "The digital timestamps are impeccably spoofed. If this leaks to the Southern District, they won't hesitate. They'll freeze your assets and subpoena every record attached to the housing project."
"I know," I said, my jaw clenched so tightly it ached. "I need you to find the origin of the email. I need to prove the document was altered post-audit."
"I'll put my best cyber-forensics team on it, but if Beatrice is behind this, she didn't use amateurs. It could take weeks to untangle the routing proxies," Marcus warned. "You have less than forty hours before whoever sent this pulls the trigger."
"What does she want?" I asked, pacing the length of the conference room. "Money? She has billions."
"She doesn't want your money, Arthur. She wants your submission," Marcus said quietly. "She wants to prove that you can't survive without the Vance name protecting you. If she destroys your independent legacy, she forces you back into the fold, or leaves you with nothing."
My phone buzzed again. The same blocked number.
I stopped pacing and answered it, putting it on speaker so Marcus could hear.
"Time is ticking, Arthur," the distorted voice mocked. "Have you reviewed the documentation?"
"I've seen the forgery," I replied coldly. "What are your terms?"
"A public press conference tomorrow morning at ten," the voice instructed. "You will announce the immediate suspension of the housing project due to 'unforeseen financial irregularities.' You will then officially sign over the controlling shares of your new development firm to the Vance Family Trust. In exchange, the original, unaltered ledger remains securely buried."
I looked at Marcus. He slowly shook his head, mouthing the word 'No.'
"And if I refuse?" I challenged.

"Then the altered ledger goes to the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the lead federal prosecutor by noon. You will be arrested for money laundering before the sun sets. The choice is yours, prodigal son."
The line went dead.
