Chapter 25 - A Clean Slate

The weeks following Julian's arrest were the quietest, most peaceful days of my life. He was denied bail, completely unable to leverage any resources to fight the overwhelming mountain of federal evidence Evelyn had handed to the prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to avoid a drawn-out trial and was sentenced to seven years in federal prison.
With his incarceration, the final, lingering shadow over my life evaporated completely. I felt lighter, as if a physical weight I hadn't known I was carrying had finally been lifted from my shoulders.
The foundation flourished in the wake of the public spectacle. My television interview had resonated so deeply that donations poured in from across the globe. We doubled our scholarship capacity overnight.
One crisp Monday morning, I sat in my office reviewing architectural blueprints for a massive new project: a physical campus for the foundation, complete with housing, mentorship centers, and advanced technology labs for our scholars.
Clara walked in, carrying two cups of coffee, radiating her usual bright energy.
"The board approved the budget for the new campus, Arthur," she announced, handing me a cup. "We are fully funded and ready to break ground in the spring."
"That’s incredible news, Clara," I smiled, looking over the detailed blueprints. "This is going to change everything. We are building a permanent sanctuary for these kids."
"We need a lead architect to finalize the structural designs," Clara noted, tapping a folder on my desk. "I've shortlisted three top firms in the city, but there is one specific architect I think you need to meet. Her name is Elena Rostova. She specializes in creating environments that foster community and healing."

"Set up the meeting for tomorrow," I said, taking a sip of the warm coffee.
I looked out the window at the bright, clear Chicago skyline. For the first time in a decade, I wasn't just defending my peace; I was actively building upon it.
