Chapter 34 - The Confrontation

I didn't schedule the press conference at a neutral hotel or a corporate PR firm. I scheduled it in the very lobby of the building where our affordable housing project was headquartered.
By 9:45 AM, the lobby was packed with local journalists, financial reporters, and city officials who had championed our initiative. The air was buzzing with confusion and anticipation. Rumors had already begun to circulate about a sudden, catastrophic shift in leadership.
At exactly 9:55 AM, Sabrina Croft walked through the glass doors.
She wore a pristine white designer suit, looking every inch the victorious, untouchable heiress. She was flanked by two formidable corporate attorneys, projecting an aura of absolute dominance. She spotted me standing near the podium and offered a small, vicious smile.
She walked confidently to the front row, expecting to watch me publicly surrender my empire to save my reputation.
I stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphones. The room fell silent, the flash of cameras illuminating the space.
"Good morning," I began, my voice steady, echoing clearly through the lobby. "I called this press conference today to address certain... irregularities that have recently come to light regarding the funding and leadership of this development project."
Sabrina’s smile widened slightly. She crossed her arms, waiting for the capitulation.
"Over the past forty-eight hours, an anonymous party attempted to aggressively blackmail me," I continued, staring directly into Sabrina's eyes. The smile instantly vanished from her face. "They threatened to release heavily altered, forged financial documents to the federal government, falsely implicating this foundation in a massive money-laundering scheme."
A loud murmur rippled through the press corps. Reporters began frantically typing on their phones. Sabrina’s attorneys exchanged a nervous, frantic glance.
"This party demanded that I immediately suspend this housing project and surrender total controlling ownership of this firm to them, or they would destroy my reputation and the lives of the families relying on this development," I declared, my voice rising with righteous fury.

Sabrina took a hesitant step backward, the color rapidly draining from her face. She realized, too late, that I had not brought a white flag. I had brought a guillotine.
"I am here today to announce that I will absolutely not surrender this company," I stated forcefully, gripping the edges of the podium. "I will not suspend this project for a single day. We do not negotiate with extortionists. We expose them."
