Chapter 27 - The Dead Inbox

|

"Arthur? What is it?" Elena asked, her hands gripping my forearm. The serene joy of the evening had completely evaporated from her face, replaced by a sudden, sharp vigilance.

"I don't know yet," I said truthfully, though the lie tasted bitter. I pocketed the phone and pulled her tightly against me, my eyes scanning the dark perimeter of the chain-link fence surrounding the site. Every shadow suddenly looked like a threat. "We need to go. Now."

The drive back to our penthouse was silent and suffocating. The glowing city lights that had looked so welcoming an hour ago now felt like spotlights, exposing us to unseen watchers. My mind raced through a Rolodex of enemies. My mother, Beatrice? Too proud for distorted phone calls. My brother, Julian? Too cowardly for direct threats.

When we walked through the heavy oak doors of the apartment, the security system chimed a reassuring green, but the comfort was hollow.

I walked straight to my private study, ignoring Elena’s questioning gaze, and booted up an old, heavily encrypted laptop I hadn't used since the final severance with the Vance family trust.

My fingers flew across the keyboard, entering a sequence of passwords I had hoped to forget. I accessed the dormant email server, bypassing three layers of biometric security to open an inbox that should have been empty for two years.

There was one unread message. No subject line. No sender address.

I clicked it open.

The email contained a single attachment—a high-resolution PDF. My blood ran cold as the document rendered on the screen.

It was a highly classified, heavily redacted financial audit from the federal investigation into Julian’s embezzlement scheme. The same scheme I had used to leverage my exit from the family. But this wasn't the sanitized version presented in court. This was raw data.

And highlighted in bright, glaring red on the second page was a series of wire transfers routed through a dummy corporation in the Cayman Islands.

Transfers that didn't lead back to Julian.

They led back to a subsidiary holding company I had briefly managed during my first year as CEO of Vance Enterprises. Money that had funded the initial seed capital for the very affordable housing project Elena and I had just broken ground on.

A single line of text was typed below the document: The foundation is dirty. 47 hours.
