Chapter 9 - The Legal Guillotine

|

Adrian’s voice went completely flat, stripped of all emotion, leaving only a hollow void of impending doom.

“What do you mean, they’re worthless?”

“Six months ago,” I explained, my tone shifting into the crisp, authoritative voice of the CEO he so deeply despised, “I transferred every single one of my controlling shares, assets, and properties into an irrevocable, blind voting trust.”

Marissa let out a muffled sob.

“According to the bylaws I personally drafted,” I said, savoring every single syllable, “any transfer of assets made under physical duress, coercion, or threat is automatically rendered null and void. Furthermore, any attempt to compel such a transfer triggers an immediate, automatic disclosure protocol to my board of trustees, my federal legal counsel, and our corporate insurers.”

“You’re lying,” Adrian snarled, grabbing me by the throat this time. His fingers dug deeply into my windpipe, cutting off my air. “You wouldn't surrender control of your own company!”

I choked, gasping for air, but I managed to force the words out of my tightening throat.

“Check… page… seventeen.”

He hesitated, his grip loosening just a fraction of an inch. He threw me backward, diving for the folder on the floor. I heard the frantic, tearing rustle of heavy parchment paper as he furiously flipped through the legal documents his own corrupt lawyers had drafted.

He found the page. I heard his eyes scanning the fine print, reading the clause I had secretly embedded into my own corporate governance months before he ever planned this heist.

I heard his breathing become incredibly shallow. The silence of absolute, catastrophic defeat descended upon him.

Then, a new sound entered the atmosphere of the estate.

It was faint at first, bleeding through the thick, soundproofed windows of the library. A high-pitched, wailing sound cutting through the quiet suburban night.

Sirens.

Lots of them.

And they were getting closer by the second.
