Chapter 4 - The Accessibility Toy

|

Adrian had mocked this exact bracelet at a strained family dinner just last month. He had pointed at it over his glass of wine, sneering as he called it an “expensive little accessibility toy for the helpless.”

He had assumed it was a medical alert device. A panic button for a blind woman who might fall down the stairs.

He never once asked why I never, ever removed it. Not in the shower, not in the boardroom, not in my sleep.

I shifted my hands behind my back, hiding the subtle movement beneath the drape of my blouse. I twisted my left thumb downward, feeling the smooth, polished surface of the metal. I found the deeply recessed, biometric button hidden on the underside of the clasp.

I pressed it once. Firmly.

For a terrible, agonizing second, there was only silence in the library. Adrian was still holding the back of my hair, waiting for me to maneuver the pen onto the paper. Marissa was still pacing near the windows.

Then, far down the sprawling west corridor of the estate, a sound echoed through the ventilation shafts.

Six heavy, electronic kennel locks disengaged simultaneously.

Click.

Click.

Click.

The mechanical sequence repeated six times, crisp and sharp, cutting through the stillness of the mansion like a gunshot.

Adrian froze completely. His hand tightened in my hair.

“What the hell was that?” he demanded, his voice suddenly pitching up an octave in genuine alarm.

On the floor beside me, Atlas stopped whimpering. The golden retriever raised his head, his ears perking forward, sensing the shift in the atmosphere long before the humans did.

Then, from the absolute darkness beyond the heavy oak doors of the library, the sound arrived.

Six deep, guttural growls rolled through the empty hallways of the mansion, vibrating against the walls like approaching, relentless thunder. It was a primal, terrifying noise that commanded instant, paralyzing dread.

My smile widened, displaying my bloodstained teeth.

“That,” I said, keeping my voice perfectly calm, “is the sound of you entering the wrong house.”
