Chapter 14 - The Trial of the Century

The evidence I had meticulously gathered utterly destroyed him. The trial was a media spectacle that consumed the financial news networks for months, but inside the courtroom, it was a rapid, brutal slaughter.
The encrypted audio recordings were played for the jury. They sat in horrified silence as they listened to Adrian clearly threaten to burn my parents alive. They heard the sickening sound of him striking me, the forced demand to sign the transfer papers, and his horrific instructions to bring open gasoline cans into the house.
His hired men, facing decades in federal prison for armed kidnapping and weapons charges, turned on him within forty-eight hours of their arrest. They testified that Adrian was the mastermind, paying them in untraceable crypto to terrorize his own family.
Marissa, desperate to avoid a lengthy sentence, surrendered months of encrypted text messages, completely outlining the premeditated plot in exchange for a reduced, white-collar sentence.
But the prosecutors didn't stop at the events of that night. Armed with the audio confession of his motives, forensic accountants tore through Adrian’s private finances. They uncovered years of rampant embezzlement, corporate bribery, and a massive, illegal scheme to short Vale Meridian’s stock immediately after taking control, planning to strip our assets through overseas shell companies.
The board of directors moved with ruthless efficiency. They voted unanimously to remove every single director, manager, and executive who had ever tied themselves to Adrian’s faction.
The district attorney was merciless. He stacked the charges: criminal conspiracy, felony extortion, attempted kidnapping, aggravated assault, massive securities fraud, and a specific, heavily penalized charge for animal cruelty against a registered service dog.
The jury didn't even need to deliberate through lunch. They returned a guilty verdict on all forty-two counts in exactly three hours.

The judge, looking down at Adrian with absolute disgust, handed him twenty-eight years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, without the possibility of early parole.
Marissa served four years. Two of the hired men received shorter sentences for cooperating, while the one who tried to run received eleven.
