Chapter 3 - The Illusion of Fragility

|

My blindness had never made me fragile; it had made me meticulous.

When you cannot see the world, you are forced to dissect it. I memorized voices, the cadence of footsteps, the exact dimensions of floor plans, the subtle hesitations in a boardroom, and the hidden patterns of human behavior that sighted people completely ignored.

Adrian had spent his entire life watching me with greedy, envious eyes. I had spent my entire life listening to him. I knew his insecurities, his triggers, and his overwhelming cowardice.

“You always thought blindness made me helpless, didn't you?” I whispered, the silence in the library amplifying my words.

Above me, I heard his breathing suddenly change. The rhythm hitched. A tiny fracture in his confidence.

“Cute speech,” he spat, though his voice lacked its previous volume.

He grabbed a fistful of my hair, dragging me violently upright until I was forced onto my knees. He shoved a heavy, gold-plated fountain pen between my bound fingers, the cold metal slipping slightly against my sweating skin.

Across the expansive room, Marissa’s high heels clicked rapidly against the floorboards. She was pacing.

“Adrian,” she called out, her voice tight with nervous energy. “I just got the text. The basement is completely secured. No police. No staff. We are totally clear.”

I kept my head bowed, hiding the genuine amusement that was threatening to break across my face. I almost laughed out loud.

No staff.

That was exactly what I had wanted him to believe. He thought he had outsmarted me by choosing the one weekend my security team was supposedly on leave. He thought he had slipped past my defenses like a master thief in the night.

He didn't realize that I had held the front door open for him.

My wrists throbbed against the plastic restraints, but my focus wasn't on the pain. My focus was entirely on the heavy, custom-made titanium bracelet resting flush against my left wrist, its cold metal pressing firmly beneath the zip-tie.
