Chapter 11 - The Final Mistake

|
Adrian made one final, catastrophic mistake.
He truly believed that because I was blind, I needed to see his face to know that he was afraid. He didn't realize that fear has a scent, a sound, and a physical vibration.
His pulse was hammering wildly against the hand he had wrapped around my throat. His sweat smelled sour and metallic. The heavy gold fountain pen he had tried to force upon me clattered uselessly to the floor, rolling away into the shadows.
“Open the gate!” he screamed at the ceiling, thinking Vance could hear him through the speakers. “Call them off, or I’ll kill her! I swear to God I’ll do it!”
“The gate is already open, Adrian,” I said, keeping my breathing slow and measured despite the pressure on my windpipe. “I opened it for the police.”
Before he could process the trap he was fully ensnared in, an explosive sound rocked the estate.
The massive, solid-oak front doors of the mansion didn't just open; they burst inward with the violent crunch of a tactical battering ram. Heavy, booted footsteps flooded the foyer.
“Police! Drop the weapons! Get on the ground!” a dozen voices shouted in unison.
I heard one of Adrian’s hired mercenaries make a desperate break for the back hallway.
A dog barked. Just once. It was a sharp, highly controlled command bark from a Malinois.
A second later, there was a heavy, wet thud, followed by the sound of a grown man screaming in absolute agony. He stopped running so fast that his momentum carried him straight into an antique console table, shattering glass and wood everywhere. The dogs had him.
Inside the library, Adrian completely lost his mind. He pulled a heavy, cold steel pistol from his waistband and pressed the barrel aggressively against my ribs.

“You ruined everything,” he whispered, his voice trembling with tears of pure rage. “My life is over.”
“No,” I corrected him softly. “You ruined it. I just documented it.”
