Chapter 9 - The First Domino

Brendan pulled out his personal phone, his hands shaking as he swiped through twenty unread text messages from his CFO, his legal counsel, and the chief risk officer at First National Bank.
URGENT: Vance Capital Management has declared a default on Senior Secured Note A.
URGENT: Personal guarantees invoked. All Fairchild family accounts frozen immediately.
URGENT: Board meeting called for 3:00 P.M. Emergency liquidation protocol initiated.
"Vance Capital?" Brendan muttered, his voice trembling as he stared at the screen. "Who the hell is Vance Capital? We don't owe money to a company called Vance!"
Nora stood at the head of the table, her hands folded neatly in front of her black dress.
"My father was Marcus Vance, Brendan," she said softly.
Brendan raised his head slowly, terror finally breaking through his arrogant mask. "What?"
"When you married me three years ago, you thought you were marrying a quiet, broke girl who would never question your authority," Nora explained, her tone as precise as a lecture. "You didn't realize that my father owned sixty percent of your company's long-term debt. He knew what kind of man you were. So he left the notes in a trust, waiting for me to turn the key."
Victoria jumped to her feet, screaming. "You treacherous bitch! You tricked my brother! You set us up!"
"I didn't set anyone up, Victoria," Nora said calmly, turning her cold gaze to her sister-in-law. "I spent three years praying that Brendan would prove my father wrong. I spent three years begging him to care about his daughter. But you were all too busy stealing from her medical fund to notice that the house was built on sand."
Brendan dropped his phone onto the table. "Nora... please... we can talk about this! Chloe... my God, Chloe... I didn't know!"
"You didn't care to know," Nora replied.

The front doorbell rang—a sharp, authoritative sound that echoed through the marble entryway.
Nora turned toward the hallway. "That will be Raymond. And the county sheriffs."
