Chapter 10 - The Paper Chain

Two tall men in dark suits stepped into the dining room, followed by an elderly gentleman with silver hair carrying a heavy leather briefcase.
Raymond Vance walked into the room with the quiet authority of a man who had spent forty years running federal courtrooms. Behind him stood three uniformed officers from the Lake Forest Sheriff's Department.
"Brendan Fairchild," Raymond announced, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from his briefcase. "I am Raymond Vance, general counsel for Vance Capital Management and executor of the Marcus Vance Estate."
Brendan backed away from the table until his knees hit the sideboard. "This is a mistake! My family has operated this firm for twenty years!"
"Your family has operated on Vance loans for five years," Raymond corrected him smoothly, setting the documents on the mahogany table. "As of 8:00 A.M. today, Vance Capital exercised its legal right to accelerate all primary debt obligations due to material breaches of trust covenants, corporate embezzlement, and fraudulent diversion of foundation assets."
Raymond turned to the officers.
"Pursuant to the emergency injunction issued by the Cook County Circuit Court, the property located at 1400 Lake Forest Drive is under immediate foreclosure lock-out. All unauthorized occupants have thirty minutes to vacate the premises."
Victoria shrieked. "Vacate?! This is my home! You can't kick me out!"
"The deed was pledged as collateral against Note B," Raymond said, not even looking at her. "You have thirty minutes to pack one bag of personal clothing. All jewelry, vehicles, and luxury items purchased using Fairchild Holdings accounts are seized pending forensic audit."

Samantha immediately grabbed her designer handbag from the chair and began taking steps toward the back exit.
"Miss Hayes," Raymond called out, stopping her in her tracks. "Don't bother driving your Mercedes home. The lease was terminated an hour ago. The repossession team is waiting at the end of the driveway."
