Chapter 20 - The Unwritten Horizon

|
Late January brought a blinding, brilliant snowstorm that covered the city in a blanket of silent silver.
In her penthouse office on the top floor of the Vance Building, Nora sat at her wide mahogany desk, reviewing the annual financial projections for the Vance Pediatric Foundation.
The foundation had already funded thirty-two life-saving heart surgeries for children across the Midwest in its first month of operation.
Raymond walked into her office, carrying a thin leather folder.
"The judge just delivered the verdict in Brendan's trial," Raymond said, setting the folder on her desk. "Eight years in state prison for corporate fraud and willful negligence."
Nora looked at the folder, but she didn't open it.
"And Victoria?" Nora asked.
"Her civil suit was dismissed," Raymond replied. "She will be paying back her portion of the estate debt for the next twenty years."
Raymond stepped back, looking at Nora with a rare, quiet smile. "Your father would be immensely proud of what you've done with the company, Nora. You didn't just protect his legacy—you saved lives."
Nora looked out the floor-to-ceiling window at the storm swirling over the lake.
Her phone chimed on the desk.
It wasn't the old black satellite phone—that had been safely stored away in her safe weeks ago. It was her new personal phone.
An incoming email notification appeared on the screen from the chief surgeon at St. Jude Children’s Hospital:
Subject: Urgent Transfer Request — Patient #408 (Pediatric Valve Repair)
Nora picked up her pen, pulled the file toward her, and unclipped her pen.
She didn't need to ask for anyone's approval. She didn't need to check with an executive assistant, wait for a committee review, or beg a husband who was busy spending money on someone else.

She signed her name at the bottom of the authorization line in firm, fluid script.
She closed the file, set her pen down, and looked back out at the vast, open horizon of the white winter sky, ready for whatever lay ahead.
