Chapter 19 - The Beggar's Plea

|

Two days before his criminal trial was scheduled to begin, Brendan broke his bail conditions and walked three miles through freezing sleet to the Vance Building downtown.

He stood in the plush marble lobby, soaked to the skin, his eyes bloodshot and hollow, begging the security guards to let him up to the penthouse office.

"Please," he wept, clutching the marble counter. "Just tell her Brendan is here! Just five minutes! Please!"

The double elevator doors slid open.

Nora walked out into the lobby surrounded by four senior executives and her legal team. She was wearing a crimson wool coat, looking radiant, powerful, and utterly beyond his reach.

Brendan broke away from the guard, dropping to his knees on the polished marble floor directly in her path.

"Nora!" he screamed, his hands clasped together in desperate supplication. "Nora, please look at me! I'm begging you! Tell the prosecutor to drop the criminal charge! I'll accept the bankruptcy! I'll give up everything! Just don't send me to prison!"

Nora stopped three feet away from him.

She looked down at the man kneeling in her shadow—the man who had once stood in her kitchen laughing while her daughter’s life slipped away.

"Get up, Brendan," she said, her voice flat and cool. "You're embarrassing yourself."

"Nora, please!" he sobbed, reaching out to touch the hem of her coat. "I was a fool! I was blind! I loved you... I loved Chloe!"

Nora stepped back, avoiding his touch as if he were covered in ash.

"You loved control, Brendan," Nora said softly. "And when you had it, you used it to kill our daughter."

She looked at the security team. "Remove him from the building."

The guards stepped forward, hauling Brendan to his feet as he screamed her name, dragging his soaking shoes across the polished marble floor toward the street.

Nora didn't watch him leave. She turned and walked out the glass doors toward her waiting car.
