Chapter 7 - The Gathering at Lake Forest

|

By 1:00 P.M., the downstairs dining room was filled with the smell of roasted meats and expensive wine.

Victoria had invited three of her socialite friends over for lunch, while Brendan sat at the head of the dark mahogany table with Samantha Hayes at his side, reviewing marketing slides for an upcoming real estate venture.

Ximena was sitting at the far corner of the table, typing rapidly on her laptop as she managed Brendan's calendar.

Nora walked down the grand staircase wearing a simple black dress, her posture straight and commanding.

As she walked into the dining room, Victoria looked up with an irritated sign. "Nora, honestly, you could at least wear something color-appropriate if you're going to wander around while we have guests. And where is the lunch menu?"

Samantha offered a small, patronizing smile, taking a delicate sip of her wine. "Nora, sweetie, if you're overwhelmed with the household management right now, I know a wonderful house manager I could recommend to Brendan. You really look exhausted."

Brendan didn't even raise his eyes from his tablet. "Nora, make sure Ximena gets the signed expense receipts for last month's catering before you go back upstairs."

Nora stood at the edge of the table, looking at the four of them: her husband, his mistress, his sister, and the assistant who had signed Chloe’s death sentence with a mouse click.

"Ximena," Nora said, her voice cutting through the soft dining room music like a blade.

Ximena stopped typing and looked up, frowning slightly. "Yes, Mrs. Fairchild?"

"Did you review the emergency application I submitted fourteen days ago?" Nora asked. "The one tagged with the red priority marker from St. Jude's Cardiology?"

Ximena blinked, glancing nervously at Brendan before regaining her composure. "Mrs. Fairchild, we've discussed this. The family trust has strict operational guidelines. Secondary medical requests over two thousand dollars require secondary board approval. I was simply following protocol."

"Which protocol?" Nora asked smoothly, taking a step toward the table. "The one where you marked the fund as 'insufficient balance' while transferring three hundred thousand dollars to Samantha Hayes' personal account on the same afternoon?"

The dining room went dead silent.

Samantha’s wine glass stopped halfway to her lips. Victoria glared at Nora in outrage, while Brendan slammed his tablet onto the polished wood table.
