Chapter 2 - The Silent Room

|

The far end of the second floor was where Brendan had insisted on putting Chloe's nursery. He claimed the hum of her oxygen machines and monitoring equipment was too disruptive for guests staying in the main wing.

Nora walked down the long, carpeted hallway, her footsteps silent. She opened the door to the small, cold room that faced the northern garden.

The crib stood in the center, empty. The white sheets were still tucked tightly around the mattress, untouched since the day the ambulance had rushed Chloe to the ICU two weeks ago.

Nora carefully placed the white urn in the center of the crib. She sat down on the wooden rocker beside it and rested her hands on her knees.

For three years, Brendan had controlled every cent that entered or left her life.

When they got married, Nora had voluntarily resigned from her senior position at a top financial risk firm in Manhattan. She held a master’s degree in actuarial science—she understood risk, debt leverage, and probability better than most Wall Street executives. But Brendan had persuaded her that his family’s wealth was vast enough for both of them, promising that her only job would be building a quiet life together.

Then Chloe was born with a rare, severe congenital heart defect.

Slowly, the golden cage closed. Brendan redirected all personal allowances through the Fairchild family trust portal. Every purchase—from specialized baby formula to private nursing shifts—required written justification.

Everything had to pass through Brendan’s executive assistant, Ximena.

Two weeks ago, Chloe’s cardiologist prescribed an emergency experimental medication that could stabilize her failing heart valve. The cost was four thousand five hundred dollars.

Nora had uploaded the medical chart, the prescription, and the doctor’s direct note.

An hour later, Ximena rejected the request. The reason logged in the system was simple: Exceeds quarterly allowance assigned to secondary dependents.

Nora had called Brendan seventeen times in six hours. He never answered.

She had driven to his corporate headquarters downtown, waiting in the marble lobby for five hours while security watched her. When Brendan finally stepped out of the executive elevator with Samantha Hayes on his arm, he pulled Nora into a side corridor.

"Don't embarrass me at work again," he told her coldly. "If you have financial problems, deal with Ximena. That's why I pay her."

A compassionate hospital doctor paid for one single dose out of his personal research fund, buying Chloe three extra days.

Nora resubmitted the request with an urgent escalation tag.
