Chapter 17 - The Final Memorial

|

On a quiet Saturday morning in early December, the sun broke through the winter clouds over a serene, private nature preserve just north of the city.

Nora stood on a grassy hill overlooking a quiet lake, accompanied only by Raymond and two close childhood friends who had flown in from New York.

In her hands, she held the white porcelain urn.

A small marble stone had been placed at the base of an ancient oak tree, carved with a simple, beautiful inscription:

Chloe Vance

A Light That Never Fades

Nora knelt beside the tree, her fingers tracing the soft green moss around the stone.

"I brought you home, my sweet girl," Nora whispered, her voice filled with a quiet, profound peace. "No more doctors. No more cold rooms. No more permission forms."

She carefully opened the top of the urn, letting the fine white ashes scatter into the gentle winter breeze, carrying them out across the clear, still water of the lake.

She stood up, pulling her scarf tighter around her neck, and looked out over the quiet landscape.

For three years, she had lived as a ghost in another man's house, allowing herself to be minimized, silenced, and broken.

Now, standing on the land her father had protected for her, Nora knew she was finally free.
