Chapter 8 - The Lawyer's Fee

Arthur walked into the diner on Monday afternoon, his leather briefcase in one hand and his trench coat draped over his arm. The lunch rush had cleared out, leaving a quiet, comfortable hum in the dining room.

I slid into the booth across from him, placing a massive slice of warm cherry pie and a mug of black coffee in front of him.

"The eviction notice against Select Properties LLC was officially voided by the judge this morning," Arthur said, taking a bite of the pie and closing his eyes in sheer bliss. "Grant’s corporate accounts are entirely frozen. The divorce will be finalized by a judge on Friday. No contest."

"What about the criminal charges?" I asked, sliding a sealed envelope across the table. Inside was the check for Arthur’s retainer.

Arthur took the envelope without looking at it. "The State Attorney is pushing for a three-year sentence for the fraud. If we press the domestic assault charges, it'll double."

"Hold the assault charges," I said firmly. "Unless he tries to fight the divorce. Let the fraud sink him. I want him to know he lost his empire because he dared to touch my daughter."
