Chapter 24 - Passing the Torch

On the morning of Hannah's twenty-eighth birthday, I called Arthur back to the diner.

Before the breakfast rush began, I sat Hannah down in booth three. Arthur placed a thick, leather-bound folder on the table.

"What's this?" Hannah asked, looking confused.

"Open it," I said.

She opened the folder and read the top page. Her eyes widened, welling with tears. "Mom..."

"I'm getting older, Hannah," I said, reaching across the table and taking her hand. "And this diner needs fresh blood to keep it running for the next twenty years. The deed is officially in both of our names. We are equal partners."

"I don't know what to say," she whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek.

"Say you'll cover the morning shift tomorrow so I can sleep in," I laughed.

Hannah grinned, pulling me into a fierce, bone-crushing hug. "Thank you, Mom. For everything."
