Chapter 14 - The Testimony

The courtroom was suffocatingly warm, smelling of polished wood and nervous sweat. Hannah took the stand, placing her hand on the Bible and swearing to tell the truth.
The prosecutor, a sharp woman in a navy suit, walked the floor.
"Ms. Carter, can you identify the signature on these delivery manifests?"
"Yes," Hannah said, her voice clear and carrying to the back of the room. "That is Grant Holloway's signature. I saw him sign those specific documents in his home office on the evening of April 14th."
The defense attorney jumped up. "Objection! Hearsay!"
"Overruled," the judge stated.
Grant sat at the defense table, his head in his hands.
"Did Mr. Holloway ever admit to you that he was intentionally mislabeling the eggs?" the prosecutor asked.

"Yes," Hannah replied, her eyes flicking to Grant. "He laughed and said the consumers were too stupid to know the difference, and the profit margins were too good to pass up."
The courtroom erupted into furious whispers. The defense attorney sank back into his chair. It was a kill shot.
