Chapter 7 - The Crimson Floor

|
I lay on the kitchen floor, gasping for air like a drowning woman. The cold hardwood pressed against my cheek, but I barely felt it. Every single nerve ending in my body was screaming in pure agony. The pain in my lower spine radiated forward, wrapping around my swollen belly in a suffocating, unbearable grip.
I tried to push myself up, but my arms shook violently and gave out, dropping me back onto the floorboards.
Then, I felt it.
A sudden, terrifying rush of warmth running down my inner thighs.
My breath caught in my throat. I forced my chin down, blinking through the hot tears and the dizzying pain to look at my legs. Slowly, I watched in absolute horror as a dark pool of crimson blood began spreading beneath the hem of my medical scrubs, staining the pristine white fabric and pooling onto the floor.
"My baby..." I choked out, a raw, primal sob tearing violently from my throat. "Oh god, my baby!"
Carter slowly stood up from the dining table. He didn't rush toward me. He didn't drop to his knees to check on his bleeding wife or his unborn child. He simply walked over and stood a few feet away, staring down at me with cold, detached annoyance.
"Don't start with your dramatic bullshit," Carter said, crossing his arms over his chest. "You probably just scratched yourself when you fell. Stop screaming."

"I'm bleeding!" I shrieked, sheer panic entirely consuming my mind. The cramp that followed was so intense it forced me to curl tightly into the fetal position. "Carter, please! The baby is in danger!"
Mrs. Eleanor didn't even leave the dining room. She just took a sip of her sparkling water, watching my agony as if it were a poorly acted play on a theater stage.
