Chapter 5 - The Cruel Feast

After what felt like an eternity of agonizing labor, I finally managed to plate the food. I carefully arranged the seasoned meat, the hot beans, and the rice onto Mrs. Eleanor’s expensive, gold-rimmed china. My hands were still shaking violently as I carried the heavy plates into the formal dining room, setting them down on the polished mahogany table.
Carter and his mother took their seats without a single word of thanks. I stood near the edge of the room, one hand discreetly supporting my heavy, aching stomach, waiting in silence for their ultimate judgment.
Mrs. Eleanor picked up her heavy silver fork, slicing a tiny piece of the meat. She brought it to her lips, took one bite, and chewed for exactly two seconds.
Then, she grimaced, grabbed a white linen napkin, and spat the food directly onto her plate in a dramatic show of absolute disgust.
"This is absolutely disgusting," she declared, pushing the plate away so hard it screeched terribly against the wood. "It is completely overcooked, under-seasoned, and entirely inedible. I cannot believe I waited all evening for this absolute garbage."
Carter barely looked up from his smartphone. He took a bite of his own food, chewed slowly, and shrugged his shoulders indifferently.
"She screws everything up, Mother. You know that," Carter muttered, typing out a text message without looking at me. "She's practically useless."
I could still taste the coppery tang of blood from my split lip. The room was spinning slightly, the overhead crystal chandelier blurring into a halo of harsh, blinding light.
"I'm late because I feel violently ill," I whispered, my voice cracking under the crushing weight of my exhaustion and fear. "I've been having pains all day."

Carter rolled his eyes, finally looking at me with total, unmasked contempt.
"Oh, here we go. The victim routine," he sneered. "Right on cue."
