Chapter 12 - Dialing the Country Bumpkin

|

The phone rang exactly three times in total before the line connected.

"Sweetheart?"

My father's deep, gravelly voice echoed out of the small speaker. It wasn't the voice of a frail old farmer. It was the voice of a man who commanded absolute respect in every room he ever entered.

Hearing that familiar, comforting sound broke the tough facade I was trying so desperately to hold together. My busted lip trembled violently, and fresh tears spilled down my cheeks, mixing with the blood pooling on the hardwood floor.

"Dad..."

That single word was all I managed to choke out. It was a pathetic, broken sound, laced with all the agony, desperation, and terror I had endured for the last two hours.

My father didn't need a lengthy explanation. He didn't need to be told I was in danger. He possessed an uncanny ability to read people, and he immediately heard the raw, unfiltered fear in my shattered voice.

"Where are you?" my father demanded, the warmth instantly vanishing from his tone, replaced by a chilling, commanding authority.

Carter quickly snatched the phone closer to his face, rolling his eyes as he adopted his slick, professional courtroom persona.

"Listen, old man, she's completely fine," Carter lied coldly, his voice dripping with condescension. "She's just being incredibly dramatic over a minor slip and fall in the kitchen. She's hormonal and confused."

There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the line. The kind of oppressive silence that always precedes a massive, destructive storm.

Then, my father asked a very simple question.

"Who is speaking?"

Carter let out an arrogant laugh, looking at his mother for validation.

"Her husband, obviously," Carter replied, scoffing at the question.

"I know exactly who you are," my father stated, his voice devoid of any warmth.
