Chapter 17 - The Fall of the King

|

The moment the heavy ambulance doors sealed shut, locking the flashing lights and the chaos outside, the adrenaline that had kept me conscious finally began to fade. And for the first time in years, surrounded by strangers fighting to save my life, I allowed myself to cry.

I didn't cry because I was weak, or because I was terrified of Carter anymore. I cried because I finally understood that I didn’t have to survive everything alone.

At the hospital, the emergency room doctors moved quickly. The next several hours became a chaotic, terrifying blur of bright surgical lights, worried medical voices, rapid examinations, and endless questions from detectives taking my statement.

They rushed me into emergency surgery to stop the bleeding and monitor the severe trauma to my abdomen. I drifted in and out of consciousness, praying to whatever higher power would listen that my little boy would survive the nightmare I had brought him into.

When I finally woke up, the room was quiet.

My father arrived just before sunrise.

He walked into my sterile hospital room wearing the exact same old, faded work jacket he had worn hundreds of times back home. He looked exhausted, having driven through the night at breakneck speeds, but his posture was as unyielding as iron.

His eyes immediately filled with heavy tears when he saw me lying in the hospital bed, covered in bruises and connected to a dozen monitors.

He didn’t ask me why I had stayed with Carter for so long. He didn’t ask me why I hadn’t told him about the abuse sooner. He didn't demand explanations or assign blame.

He simply walked to the side of the bed, reached out with his strong, calloused hands, and gently took mine.
