The wail of the sirens started in the distance, a faint, high-pitched scream cutting through the quiet Virginia night. But within seconds, they grew louder, multiplying in number, screaming down our street with terrifying, undeniable speed.
Mrs. Eleanor’s face drained of all color. The aristocratic matriarch suddenly looked like a terrified, cornered animal.
Carter spun around, looking frantically toward the large front bay window. The flashing red and blue lights began violently illuminating the dark living room, casting chaotic shadows across the walls.
"No," Carter muttered, his hands beginning to shake uncontrollably. "No, no, no. This can't be happening."
The sirens cut off abruptly as multiple vehicles slammed into park directly on our front lawn.
Carter turned back toward me, absolute panic replacing the cruel dominance in his eyes.
"You did this?" he demanded, pointing a trembling finger at me. "You set me up?"
I shook my head slowly, gripping my bleeding abdomen as another wave of pain washed over me.
"No," I replied, my voice barely audible but laced with finality. "You did this to yourself."
A few moments later, someone knocked firmly and aggressively on the heavy oak front door. Then, another knock, louder this time, accompanied by the heavy thud of a police baton.

"Emergency services and Alexandria Police! Open the door!" a loud voice boomed from the porch. "We need everyone to step away from the injured woman immediately!"
For the first time in the entire time I had known him, Carter looked genuinely afraid. He dropped the phone onto the counter and took three rapid steps backward, distancing himself from my bleeding body on the floor. His fortress of wealth and legal connections was crumbling around him in real-time. The monsters who had tormented me were suddenly realizing that their actions had inescapable consequences, and the law was standing right on their porch.
