Chapter 16 - The Sound of Salvation

The heavy front door burst open before Carter could even reach the handle. A team of paramedics rushed into the foyer, closely followed by two fully armed police officers. Their eyes swept the grand living room before immediately locking onto the horrific scene in the kitchen.
Mrs. Eleanor began talking rapidly, her hands fluttering in the air in a desperate attempt to regain control of the narrative.
"Officers, this is all a massive misunderstanding," she babbled, her voice shrill and panicked. "She’s highly emotional. She’s pregnant, you see. She exaggerates absolutely everything. She just slipped!"
The first responders completely ignored her. They rushed past Carter, practically shoving him out of the way, and knelt immediately beside me on the blood-soaked floor.
"Ma'am, I need you to look at me," a female paramedic said, shining a small penlight into my eyes. "Can you tell me your name?"
I gave her my name, my voice cracking.
"Do you know what day it is?"
I nodded slowly, gripping her gloved hand as tightly as I could.
They moved with incredible precision, applying pressure to my back, stabilizing my neck, and carefully lifting me onto a portable stretcher.
As I was being strapped in and wheeled out of the kitchen, I turned my head and looked back at Carter one last time. He stood entirely motionless beside the kitchen island, flanked by the two police officers who were now asking him very pointed questions.
The same man who had spent years making me believe I was entirely powerless suddenly looked incredibly pathetic and small.
My father's voice still drifted from the phone resting on the counter.
"I'm coming, sweetheart," Dad promised.
"Dad..."
May you like
"I'll be there."
The ambulance doors slammed shut, enclosing me in safety.
