Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Coup

|
The glass-walled boardroom of Whitfield Enterprises sat on the fiftieth floor, offering a panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline. When Ethan and Grace entered, the room was already filled with fifteen wealthy, older men in dark suits.
At the head of the table stood Richard Cole, Vanessa's father. His face was purple with rage.
"What is the meaning of this, Ethan?" Richard roared, slamming his hands on the mahogany table. "You bring the maid who assaulted my daughter into a confidential board meeting?"
Ethan maneuvered his wheelchair smoothly to the opposite end of the table. He didn't yell. He didn't flinch.
"Take a seat, Richard," Ethan commanded, his voice cold and echoing with absolute authority. "And address my partner with respect."
The word 'partner' sent a shockwave through the room. Board members exchanged wide-eyed, panicked glances.
"Partner?" Richard scoffed, letting out a cruel, barking laugh. "You're parading a common house cleaner around as a PR stunt because you're desperate! You're a cripple losing his grip on his company!"
Ethan’s jaw tightened, but before he could speak, Grace stepped forward. She didn't shrink back. She placed her hands firmly on the back of Ethan's wheelchair, standing tall and imposing in her ivory suit.
"Mr. Cole," Grace said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the silent room. "I spent six years managing the private residence of this company's CEO. I have seen the confidential shredder bins. I have overheard the late-night phone calls. I know exactly which shell company in the Cayman Islands you used to hide the embezzled funds from the European merger last spring."
The blood completely drained from Richard Cole’s face. He stumbled backward, collapsing into his leather chair.
Grace hadn't been a spy; she had just been an invisible woman who paid attention while emptying the trash.
"If you attempt to call a vote of no confidence against Ethan today," Grace continued, her eyes locking onto Richard with lethal precision, "I will hand the pieced-together ledgers directly to the SEC. You will not only lose your board seat, Richard. You will go to federal prison."
The room was deathly quiet.

"The engagement to your daughter is over, Richard," Ethan added smoothly, sealing the trap. "You will sell your shares back to the company at a twenty percent deficit, and you will resign by morning. Do we have an understanding?"
Richard Cole looked at the disabled man he had underestimated, and the maid who had just destroyed his life. He nodded, completely broken.
