Chapter 17 - The First Steps

|

The rehabilitation process was brutal. It was not a magical, overnight cure. It was months of agonizing physical therapy, sweat, tears, and terrifying frustration inside the Swiss clinic.

But Ethan fought like a demon.

Six months after the surgery, Grace was sitting on a bench in the clinic’s private rehabilitation garden. The autumn leaves were turning gold and red.

The heavy glass doors of the physical therapy wing opened.

Grace stood up, holding her breath.

Ethan stepped out into the sunlight. He was not in his wheelchair. He was heavily gripping two aluminum crutches, his legs shaking with the immense effort, but he was standing. He was standing tall, his broad shoulders squared, looking like a conquering king.

He locked eyes with Grace. He took a slow, agonizingly deliberate step forward. Then another.

Tears streamed down Grace’s face. She didn't run to help him. She knew he needed to do this himself.

He walked twenty feet across the garden patio, his breathing heavy, until he reached her. He dropped the crutches, letting them clatter loudly against the stone pavement, and wrapped his arms around her waist, burying his face in her neck to steady himself.

"I told you," Ethan gasped, laughing and crying simultaneously into her hair. "I told you I would walk you down the aisle."

"You crazy, stubborn, beautiful man," Grace wept, kissing his face repeatedly, holding his weight as they stood together in the sun.

Two months later, they returned to New York.

The press had caught wind of the miraculous surgery, but Ethan and Grace ignored the media frenzy. They had a promise to fulfill.

The wedding was held in the grand penthouse, surrounded only by the people who truly mattered. Marcus stood as Ethan’s best man. Micah, wearing a tiny, custom tuxedo, proudly held the velvet ring box.

When the music started, Grace walked down the makeshift aisle, her heart soaring.

Ethan stood at the altar. He was no longer using crutches. He leaned slightly on a sleek, silver cane, but his posture was perfect, his dark eyes burning with absolute devotion as he watched his bride approach.

They exchanged vows not as a billionaire and a maid, but as two warriors who had fought through the darkest parts of the world to find each other.

"I love you, Grace," Ethan whispered, slipping the wedding band onto her finger.

"I love you, Ethan," she promised.

They kissed, the small crowd erupting into joyous applause. It was the perfect, fairy-tale ending to a story that had begun with a violent slap in a ballroom.

But in the world of billionaires and corporate empires, the shadows are never truly banished forever.
