Chapter 16 - The Agonizing Wait

|

The flight to Geneva was tense and quiet. Grace held Ethan’s hand the entire way, her heart trapped in a perpetual state of terrified freefall. Micah had stayed back in New York under the protective watch of Marcus and the security team, blissfully unaware of the life-or-death gamble his new father was taking.

The private Swiss clinic looked more like a luxury spa than a hospital, nestled against the snow-capped Alps. But the sterile smell of antiseptic betrayed its true nature.

The morning of the surgery, Grace sat by Ethan’s bed. He was dressed in a standard hospital gown, but he looked incredibly calm.

"If something goes wrong," Ethan whispered, his thumb stroking the back of her hand. "The trust is fully transferred. You and Micah will control the company. You will never have to worry about anything again."

"Stop talking like that," Grace wept, leaning down to press her forehead against his chest, listening to the strong, steady beat of his heart. "You promised you would fight. You promised you would come back to me."

"I always keep my promises to you, Grace," he smiled softly, kissing the top of her head.

The nurses arrived, injecting the sedative into his IV. His eyes grew heavy, his grip on her hand slowly loosening.

"I love you," Ethan murmured, his eyes slipping shut.

"I love you," she sobbed, watching as they wheeled the most important piece of her soul down the white corridor and through the heavy, swinging doors of the surgical suite.

The wait was an agonizing, psychological torture.

Grace sat in the private waiting room for twelve hours. She drank terrible coffee. She paced the length of the room until her feet blistered. She watched the sun set behind the mountains, plunging the clinic into darkness.

Every time a door opened, her heart stopped.

Finally, just past midnight, Dr. Aris walked into the waiting room. He was still wearing his blue scrubs, a surgical mask pulled down around his neck. He looked profoundly exhausted, sweat matting his gray hair.

Grace stood up, her entire body trembling violently. The silence in the room stretched into an eternity.

"Dr. Aris," Grace choked out, unable to bear the suspense a second longer. "Please."

Dr. Aris looked at her, offering a slow, weary, but unmistakably triumphant smile.

"The surgery was a success, Mrs. Whitfield," the doctor said softly. "The nerve grafts held perfectly. There were no complications."

Grace’s knees completely gave out. She collapsed into a nearby chair, burying her face in her hands, weeping with a sheer, unadulterated joy that shattered every wall she had ever built.
