Chapter 4 - The Viral Sensation

|
By six a.m., Grace’s phone wasn't just buzzing; it was practically vibrating off the cheap Formica kitchen table.
She poured a cup of instant coffee and opened a news app. The headline stared back at her in bold, aggressive letters: THE MAID WHO TAMED THE BILLIONAIRE: Socialite Vanessa Cole Humiliated by Housekeeper.
There was a high-definition photograph covering half the screen. It captured the exact moment Grace’s hand locked around Vanessa’s wrist. Grace’s expression was fierce, unyielding, and protective. Ethan sat in his wheelchair behind her, looking at Grace with an intensity that the internet had immediately romanticized.
"Oh, no," Grace whispered, scrolling through the comments.
“Who is she? She’s gorgeous.”
“Vanessa had it coming. I heard she treats staff like garbage.”
“Get you a woman who defends you like that maid defends Whitfield.”
A loud, aggressive knock on the apartment door made her spill her coffee. Grace froze. Had Vanessa sent lawyers? Or worse, thugs?
She crept to the peephole. Standing in the dingy hallway was a man in an immaculate, thousand-dollar suit. It was Arthur Sterling, Ethan’s lead corporate attorney. She recognized him from the penthouse meetings she used to clean up after.
Grace unlocked the door, leaving the chain on. "Mr. Sterling?"
"Ms. Mallerie. May I come in? I represent Mr. Whitfield," Arthur said, holding up a sleek leather briefcase. "We have a highly urgent matter to discuss regarding the events of last night."
Grace unhooked the chain and let him in. Arthur looked around the cramped, peeling apartment, his expression carefully neutral.
"Have I been fired?" Grace asked, wrapping her arms protectively around herself.
"Quite the contrary," Arthur said, pulling out a thick stack of documents. "Vanessa Cole’s public relations team is currently attempting to spin the narrative. They are preparing to release a statement claiming you are an unstable, obsessed stalker who attacked her unprovoked. They want to bury you to save her reputation."
Grace’s blood ran cold. "I didn't attack her! She was going to strike him!"
"We know that," Arthur said calmly. "And Ethan is not going to allow the Cole family to destroy your life. However, he has proposed a countermeasure. One that will require your absolute cooperation."

"What kind of countermeasure?"
Arthur slid a contract across the small kitchen table. "He wants to hire you for a new position. A highly public one."
